Summary - Apparently, as late as 2:00 a.m., all Zunes in reportedly North America, not sure about foreign countries, had automatically rebooted and were stuck at a 100% reboot screen with the backlight still on. I had a previous article on how to fix it by opening up the Zune and disconnection the battery but that only works until the battery dies, you shut it off, or plug it in to your computer or wall charger. It is believed to be the internal clock of the Zune not set to go into 2009 or past December 31st 2008. Lol, Does this mean that Microsoft did not expect their Zune to succeed as well as an Apple Ipod? So what does that mean? They have no self confidence! JK.

All Zune and microsoft have to say about the said issue is that they are aware of the problem and are currently investigating. They appreciate our patience. Wow, hey microsoft we appreciate good products they dont go apocalyptic on us when the year changes! What does this mean for next year? Windows Vista 64-bit will shut down and eat your harddrive information when the ball drops?

Imagine watching the ball drop and seeing your Vista freak out and shut down. Lol. Well until Microsoft/Zune gets their crap together i guess we will have to sit around and twiddle our thumbs.

This is a widespread malfunction with only the 30G models (It's a bug in a driver for a part that is only used in the Zune 30). Mine and my hubby's are doing the same thing. Read the posting below from the Zune.net forum written by a support tech. The internal clock will reset itself at the start of the new year. Just stick it out until then. Let your battery die, recharge and reboot tomorrow.

"Early this morning we were alerted by our customers that there was a widespread issue affecting our 2006 model Zune 30GB devices (a large number of which are still actively being used). The technical team jumped on the problem immediately and isolated the issue: a bug in the internal clock driver related to the way the device handles a leap year. The issue should be resolved over the next 24 hours as the time change moves to January 1, 2009. We expect the internal clock on the Zune 30GB devices will automatically reset tomorrow (noon, GMT). By tomorrow you should allow the battery to fully run out of power before the unit can restart successfully then simply ensure that your device is recharged, then turn it back on. If you’re a Zune Pass subscriber, you may need to sync your device with your PC to refresh the rights to the subscription content you have downloaded to your device."

I have a 30 gb Zune as well and have had it now for 2 years (and it is still going strong. TAKE THAT IPOD!!!! lol!). Mine was working fine. I had just gotten back from a trip with my youth group and my Zune tagged along as well. Went flawlessly. Then, I take it out 2 my truck, plugged it into my mp3 radio Adapter and it didn't respond. Locked the key pad and unlocked it again. Came on and froze on the boot screen (aka the logo screen). I went to support and followed the instructions that were on microsoft's site and it is back to it's old self! YAAAYYY!

It's been solved now. Microsoft just messed up with the calendar and the Zune froze while trying to determine why there's an extra day this year. Just let it die and then turn it on tomorrow when 2009 starts. Or, if you're like me and you don't feel like waiting, take it apart and unhook the battery for about 30 seconds and it should work.

Here's Microsoft's official story:
