If the issue persists, try running Windows Media troubleshooter. Open the Windows Media Player troubleshooter by clicking the Start button > Control Panel.
In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Click View all, and then click Windows Media Player Library.
If the system exhibit same behavior, You may disable and then enable Windows Media Player on expanding Media features from the Windows on or off features option and check if this resolves the issue. For more details, you may refer to the following link:

If the issue persists after performing the above steps, create a new user profile and check if the Windows Media Player is working in a new user profile. To create a new user profile:
• Open ‘User Accounts’ by clicking the Start button > Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts.
• Click ‘Manage another account‘ > ‘Create a new account‘.
• Type the name you want to give the user account, choose account type as Computer Administrator, and then click ‘Create Account‘.
• Log off and log on with the new account.
• Test Windows Media Player in new user account.
If the Windows Media Player is working in a new user profile, it is an issue with corrupted user profile. You may try to repair a corrupted user profile by following the instructions from the following link:

If the above steps does not work, you may perform system restore and restore it to the date prior this issue occurred. All the data on computer will be safe but the applications that you have installed after that restore point, you might need to re-install it.
