You need a smart phone that has a built in Hot Spot or shared wifi connection. iPod Touch's are not able to get an internet signal without a provider. You can also get a wifi pocket hot spot from Verizon, but it's $50.00 a month and you only get 3gigs. Your best bet is to make sure your phone has the Hot Spot option, so you aren't paying for a phone and for a wifi hot spot. Other than that, you can only get a connection where there is wifi.

ALSO, there is a CASE you can buy that turns your ipod touch into a portable hotspot! I forgot about that until after I answered your question. Here's some info about that http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/technology-blog/peel-mobile-wi-fi-case-ipod-touch-gets.html

Wifi has to be there for the touch to pick it up. Meaning, if you're out in the middle of nowhere, you're not going to have any internet, but if you go to a coffee shop that has wifi, you'll be able to connect to their wifi. Same if you have wifi at your house.

Some computers connect automatically. The only thing that you have to do is make sure the wireless in your computer is turned on. There should be a button with an indicator light near your keyboard. If you have trouble locating it, refer to your user's manual for the location.

For older computers more steps are needed. With a computer running windows open your start menu and find "network" or "internet connections". There should be an option for wireless that you can click. Your computer will search for wireless connections and you will be offered a list of options. Find the connection in the list for the location that you are at. Once you click it you will be connected.

For wireless connections that have passwords the wireless wizard is your best option. It will allow you to first enter the SSID which is the name of the network. Usually the SSID and password are posted in locations where the access is free. The SSID is the name of the network. Keep clicking next through the screens and enter the user name an password in the indicated fields.

Go to "wifi" and if a network pops up under "choose a network" click it but if it asks for a password, then you can't get it. But sometimes people don't have a secure password on their networks, some people do, most public places (stores and such) dont have a pw.

Look into getting a "mifi" device. It's a portable hotspot. Most large wirless carriers will have them.
