I'm a bass lover and I've been told that the Sony headphones are great but I want to be able to enjoy the highs and mids without any problem or distortion, is the sony pulse a good choice for me or should I buy the AudioTechnica?

Audio-Technica wins HANDS DOWN, Sony is MEDIOCRE ONLY. And, music is MUCH more than thumping, overpowering bass.

Other REPUTABLE brands include Sennheiser, Shure, Grado, Denon, AKG, Bowers & Wilkins, Etymotic and Beyerdynamic.

Both are good heaphones in my opinion, but the Audio Technica M50s has better sound and has some okay bass. The Sony Pulse has good sound quality and way better bass than the Audio Technica M50s, the Pulse are great for bass lovers. The downside to both of the headphones are they are big and clunky, not very portable in my opinion, I wouldn't want to walk around with those headphones.

IMO, the ATH-M50 are the most overrated headphones ever, probably by a bunch of pimply-faced kids who have no idea what good sound is. I haven't tried the XB500, but I bet they're more "musical" sounding, particularly for bass-heavy music. I'd give those a shot. The M50s have horribly recessed mids and thin, fatiguing highs. They have some pretty deep bass, but not much "slam" due to the lack of mids. The EQ is so V-shaped it would be impossible to use them for any pro mixing or recording application, supposedly what they're made for. They give you almost no idea how something will sound over normal monitors with flat frequency response. Anybody who wants my M50s can buy them cheap. They've barely been used.
