If I have several playlists and there are duplicate songs that appear on each of those playlists, will iTunes actually copy them twice or will it copy once but appear on the appropriate playlists?

Itunes only keeps one copy of the song. Playlists are just lists of songs, not the actual songs themselves. The playlists know where to find the song on your hard drive so you can have it in as many playlists as you want, and each playlist will look for the song in the same location.

if the song is only present on one location on your computer, then it will only copy the song once onto your ipod. but if you have the same song stored in two different places, and itunes happens to link up to both of them, it will copy them both on your ipod. playlist duplicates wont cause duplicate songs on your ipod
