iPod Touch Software update help?!?

Question

A couple of months ago I updated my iPod for the first time in about a year. Yeah. I went a whole year without plugging it into a computer.

I have a SECOND GENERATION iPOD TOUCH.
It's running version 2.1.1, as the about section tells me.

Now, not having updated my iPod for a year, I'm guessing that I missed a software update or two?

I click "check for update" but it tells me that I am not connected to the internet, which I am. :P

Because I haven't had an update, iTunes says that my iPod cannot play any of my TV shows or music videos, and many of my apps are no longer transferring. Some apps say that I can't even use them on "this" iPod when I try to download them. But they are, in fact, FOR iPod touch.

Can someone please help me? Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Apple's website is no use and I don't know where to turn.

In general my problems are:
1) iTunes won't allow me to check for an update, let alone download one.

2) my iPod is starting to lose functions such as playing videos and certain apps because they are suddenly not compatible! (I'm attributing this to the lack of a software update)

1) honestly, i dont know why its not letting you. did you press 'check for update'? maybe try searching for the update in the store?



2) you guessed right. alot of apps are not supporting older software versions, like 2.1.1 because it doesnt have as much functionality as the new software. its on version 4.1 right now,
