windows media player wont play any of my dvds, no problem with avi files though?

Question

When i put my dvds into my laptop they open up windows media player but all i get is this message pop up:

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

i tried using driver detective like one site said but i have to pay to use it which i dont want to do. How can i fix this problem? do i just need another codec? i also have divx player but that wont play them either
