I don't have anything to say that is anywhere close to the "Hollywood Sensationalism" that is tied to this American success story of Dr. Amar Bose and his Bose Corp....

But, I do have some facts to share about corporate gains and their heavy reliance on branding.

Lets first start with answering your question with cold hard facts about the Bose Sounddock:

Facts:

Bose Sounddock II: MSRP: $299.95

Bose Sounddock Portable: MSRP: $399.95

Bose Sounddock 10: MSRP:$599.95

all in US dollars.

All of these units are encased in ABS plastic [Waveguide-transmission line design] with a steel grill. All of them have 2 drivers for the highs and mids and lows... the Sounddock 10 has an extra driver: 5.25" subwoofer in the middle --that helps with the lows...

The 2 drivers that handles highs/mids/lows measure 2". They are made of untreated paper... and has foam-fabric for the driver surrounds [most other quality drivers use a type of rubber]. There are absolutely NO TWEETERS present. The 2" paper is doing everything.

So Bose knows that without the use of tweeters and quality drivers... they would have to do something special. So they use a combination of Agressive DSP effects and Transmission Line [tunnel like] enclosure to "Force" these small paper drivers to do what they are inefficient at [inefficient at everthing] except noisy.

This design of using small paper drivers and agressive DSP effects yeilds a very Fatiguing listening experience, recessed mids:vocals, synthetic overboosted highs:trebble with highs-above-10khz almost missing, monotoned bass, and colored-synthetic-inaccurate music experience.

>> Footnote: IF you like this synthetic music experience of Bose signature sound, then Congratulations! Good for you! But don't deny the facts: Bose is inaccurate and not what they advertise to be: which is Life-like, quality "Better Sound Thru Research". And IF you can afford Bose's outrageous-rip-off prices: then good for you!-go ahead, it's your money... but Yahoo Questioners want REAL answers... not BS that Bose feeds people thru marketing. <<

I've had the Sounddock 10 for a few days... and had to return it fast - cuz the AUX input wouldn't work and as I compared it side by side with my system, I couldn't stand the sound-noise coming from them. While the sound is not all BAD, it definitely cannot compare to quality from the likes of Audioengine or Klipsch to name a few [which is also the systems I have].

Hope this Helps!

Bose Sounddock 10 is wonderful. It is in orbit with one of my faves B&W Zepplin series. I was pleasantly surprised. The Zepplin series is outstanding, but the awkward shape and weight reduce portability. The Bose Sounddock 10 is a bulky and heavy unit, very simplistic and focused, it does what it is designed to do well. A no excuses powerful and complete sound system. Its an internally muscular set that has the power to deliver in circumstances lesser equipment could not deliver in. It may very well be the best product Bose has put on the market, ever. It needs a padded carrying case. If I get deployed it goes with me for the troops I serve. This is what I mean about the overall package. It can deliver sonic joy and memories even in war. If I didn't believe this to be the case from the hellish circumstances I have to deal with, I would not carry a 20 pound load, simply because its Bose. I need back up when its critical to help the troops heading into or coming out of tragic circumstances. Bose has designed a powerful musical asset to do so.

Best.

Nice sound. Very expensive. You can get as good as sound for less money elsewhere...
