The term AVI actually covers a variety of formats. Windows Media Player has some formats it knows, and if the video is another format it tries to find a decoder (codec) on the Internet. If it can't it just plays the sound. Or maybe nothing.

Download VLC player. It's free, and it knows nearly all the formats. It works much better than WMP.

You're missing the proper codec to enable your video. In short, this means that your media player cannot pick up the visual without the proper code to do so. You need to download these codec files:

- You could probably bypass everything by simply installing VLC player. This is a media player much like Windows Media Player, but it has tons of built-in codec so you won't have to worry about downloading anything else. Moreover, VLC is much smoother on your computer--not as bulky as WMP so it won't slow your computer down: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

- If VLC doesn't work, or you simply want to make sure you have all the codec you need for the future, you can download this package which has pretty much everything you'll ever need: http://www.cccp-project.net/

- If that doesn't work, then go ahead and download DivX, seeing as a lot of media files use DivX codec these days--you can even find DVD players that support DivX these days: http://www.divx.com/en/win

I hope this helps and good luck!!

You might need to get a video codec. DivX and Xvid are the most well-known video codecs, and I know personally that there's just sound when the codec is required for the video. It's easy to find on the internet, just Google "Divx codec" or something like that.

no problem, what you need are the codecs to the video which stands for coder-decoder of the video, this site http://www.free-codecs.com has codec packs so youll never run into this problem again, I suggest the k-lite codec pack

when you install it make sure you have checked where it says use media player and not media player classic as default player because it comes with an old version of windows media player and I think it defaults to that
