In order to put music on your iPod, you need to download (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ )iTunes if you haven't already done so (or install the software from the CD that came with your Nano).
You can buy music from the iTunes Music store which will be downloaded and stored on your computer. When you connect your Nano, iTunes will automatically put the music on iPod.
You can also import CDs into iTunes. Just place a music CD in your CD drive with iTunes open, and it will fill in all of the Artist and track information for your. You can then select what songs you wish to import, or import them all. Once you've imported some songs, you can connect your iPod Nano and iTunes will automatically upload the newly imported songs to the device.
The links below provide additional information to help you along your way. The second link goes directly to a "how-to" section and walks you through transfering music to your iPod using iTunes.

You download it from the iTunes Music Store or any other program that has MP3's and you put it into your iTunes library. Then you connect that USB cable to your ipod and it downloads the songs. Go to www.itunes.com for help.
