This ipod is for a gift this weekend and i do not have the time to drive to the mac store (about 45 minutes away) before this weekend.

I'll probably end up buying the ipod from a local retailer (target, bestbuy), but i still want to buy a protection plan from the apple store for it.

Apple allows you to buy protection plans X number of days after a purchase, but does this apply to apple products brought elsewhere?

You can purchase an AppleCare protection Plan within one (1) year of your initial purchase. The terms & conditions of the APP are available at http://images.apple.com/legal/applecare/docs/AppleCare_Protect_Plan_NA_en.pdf.

If that doesn't provide you with the info you want, ring up Apple at 1800-MY-APPLE (US Only) or 133-MAC (AU Only)

Yes, you can still buy the software at the store. And please buy it, I will tell you know that it will come in use. I am on my third ipod touch, having 2 replaces in the last 2 months. Not that they are bad though..just the first one over heated, second froze. But apple protection plan is available when ever your in need of it. You do not have to buy it rite away, because it will be under warranty. Hope the person getting it loves the new toy!!

What I always do on my Macs is wait and see. You can buy Applecare for your MacBook Pro at anytime during the standard 1 year warranty. So what I usually do is buy it at the very end of the first year. The two Apple laptops I've owned Applecare has payed for itself in the long run.
