Look for features, GB (capacity), design, and battery life.

iRiver Clix. The BEST flash player, BY FAR.

It stores 2GB (about 500 songs), views photos, plays video, has an FM tuner, FM + voice recording, and the battery lasts 19/20 hours before you have to charge it. You can download games onto the Clix, too.

It's got a cool design. You press the edge of the screen to navigate. Don't mind the pictures, it's much smaller than it looks.

It's $200, the same price as the matching-in-capacity Nano. The Clix won CNET's Editor's Choice award.

The best large capacity player is the Creative Zen Vision: M, narrowly. It's customizable, and has a great screen along with a wide range of features and solid battery life.

Honorable mention goes to the Sandisk Sansa e200 series (I have one of these, too. They're not as great as the Clix, but still good.) and the Toshiba Gigabeat S.

Sony do a good range of mp3 players going up to 2GB and some have built in radio's. I know the space isn't much, but it'll hold around 200 songs. The battery life is brilliant and the new soft ware for the player is stable. Also it charges via the usb port, and will kick the iPod's *** for playing time. Also very small, light and easy to use. 3 mins charging will give you 3 hrs of playing time.

Right now, I think the BEST player for music and video is the Creative Zen Vision M. It is SUPERIOR to the iPod 30GB for the following reasons:

1) Better battery life for video -- ZVM 4 hours vs 2 hours on iPod 30GB

2) Better video display - ZVM 262,000 colors vs 65,000 colors on iPod

3) Easy to use user interface my 7 year old can use (Creative is suing Apple for violating patents on UI so who imitated who?)

4) Supports subscription music so you can fill the player with a virtually unlimited number of songs for a flat fee of $10 a month with a pre-paid one year subscription, rather than buying songs. Given that a 30GB player can old 5000 songs or more, this is a huge savings over buying the songs. Besides, if your hard drive fails, you don't lose the songs you bought. You just download the rentals again. (Apple doesn't support subscription music)

5) Less expensive places to buy the same songs you can get on iTunes -- 79cents, 88cents, or 99cents versus 99cents on iTunes.

6) Built-in FM radio in case you need to check the weather, news, or just wanna listen to something different.

7) Shortcut button on the UI.

8) Parity with iPod -- it displays album art, plays audio books from Audible.com

Any of the Creative Zen players is a good bet. I also have a Zen Microphoto (my wifes) and not a single problem in 8 months.

The new Zen V or Zen V Plus also look pretty sweet.

sorry to be generic, but iPod is the best. A few years ago, I did purchase an ARCHOS JUKEBOX. It was 20 GB, and $230.... it was kind of big, as far as mp3 players go, but I LOVED it... then it got stolen. The interface was brilliant for it though. I don't even know if they still sell them. It had a little mic built in and everything...

all mp3 players are made with Samsung Chips etc in them... you could do far worse by buying a little Tecknika Machine they have in Tesco's.. 512mb+ or you will run out of space quickly....IPOD's are Excellent too.....

on Ebay.. i got a little MMC/SD card player.. and you can load up a Memory card, upto 2gb.. Good Stereo Sound, and two headphone sockets.... Equaliser etc.. have a look at Ebay.. Whatever Headphones you get though.. they are always a weak link, Buy a pair of GRADO S60'S for the best sound you will get for the money... good luck .

don't get an ipod they are S**t despite wat most ppl say

the itunes softwear it the worst around(unless u go a mac) the headphones are cheap and nasty ana as for the battery life if you do anything else but just letting the music play (e.g changing tracks constantly or looking at videos/pics)the battery only last about 5 hours (1 1/2 with video)

id get the new sony mp3 its twice as good

I'd recommend getting an iPod! It's the best out there, and it's often imitated yet never duplicated.
