What is the best way to convert FLAC files so I can play them on my iPOD?

Can I convert them without loss of sound quality?

Any free software for this?

I have to make a correction-- there DOES exist a lossless format for ipods. It's called ALAC, "Apple Lossless Audio Codec". If you choose that format, no quality will be lost upon conversion. And yes there is free software to make the conversion, the one I'd recommend is Foobar2000 but it makes no difference which software you use, they'd all do the same job.

But I agree that on an ipod, you probably won't hear a difference between ALAC and a high-bitrate AAC or MP3. I guess it depends on your headphones, which ipod it is, and the song in question. If your ipod has more space than you can use, then I guess you might as well use ALAC. Otherwise maybe just for your favorite songs. The next best format an iPod supports is AAC. (Or if you have an older ipod, you can install the Rockbox firmware, which would allow you some freedoms including the ability to play more file types such as OGG and FLAC.)

To convert flac files to iPod files without lossing of sound quality, so easy, but first, you should know, the best video format for iPod is mp4(avc/h.264 video encoder, aac audio encoder) videos, so you need to use a right software to convert your flac files to the right iPod mp4 files. but I don't think there is a free software can do this well. I am using RZ Video Converter which can convert any videos or audios between different formats with good quality, such as convert flac files to the right iPod mp4 files without lossing of sound quality, etc. Yahoo or google search and download RZ Video Converter. Hope it can help you.

So..

A good program to convert audio file is Total Audio Converters (it supports a bunch of formats such as WAV, MP3, Ogg, MP4, FLAC, APE and others). Free download here http://bitly.com/1sW2tu5

I guess it's the sotware you need.

Th iPod doesn't support FLAC nor any other lossless audio format and you wouldn't be able to distinguish FLAC vs lossy anyways on an iPod, since tests have shown that the iPod has lower audio quality compared to other audio devices.

To convert FLAC to mp3, AAC, etc. Use MediaCoder Audio Edition: http://www.mediacoderhq.com/audio/

There are several different editions: http://www.mediacoderhq.com/editions.html

It uses the LAME mp3 Encoder for superior sound quality.

If you want to cram as many songs as possible on it, use AAC. It has better quality than mp3's at lower bit rates.
